So, you want to travel, but not pay $50 + for a room or suite at a hotel?

Somethings around the $5.00 to $10.00 range fit your budget better?

This Hub is right for you.

In order to do most things that save you money, thinking outside the normal channels is paramount. Their are hostels, hotels and private rooms throughout the world that are available to rent - you just have to know where to look.

Lets start with the most basic of accommodations, hostels.

Hostels were first set up in Europe for students that wanted a place to stay without having to spend a lot of money. Hence, most hostels throughout the world have at least one room that has bunk beds. A place to sleep, with very few amenities.

Since travel has evolved, hostel now a days are used by almost everyone - from students traveling on the cheap, to businessmen who want to save a buck or two, to senior citizens who are traveling on a low budget.

Hostels are found in almost every country throughout the world - the US, Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Africa and Asia. Anywhere that a person could think of traveling, probably has a hostel within the country

The best sites to find hostels at are:

1) http://www.hostelworld.co

2) http://www.hostels.com.

3) http://www.hostelbookers.com

4) http://www.hihostels.com

These sites will allow you to make reservations online, and usually they have opinions from travelers that have stayed at the hostels.

Like most things in life, it is always best to double check the quality of the hostel before booking.

To double check the quality of the hostels that are listed, if no opinions are given at the sites listed above, check out these sites.

1) The Lonely Planet - A travel site with tons of information and recommendations on hostels and hotels. Sites and cities are discussed, too.

2) Moon Travel Guides - Basically the same as Lonely Planet, just a different site with different people.

3) BootsnAll Travel - Another website full of information and recommendations.

4) Dave's Travel Corner A website full of blogs, photography and recommendations.

This would give you a good idea if the hostels are worth staying at.

By checking the sites above, this will also give you an idea of what there is to see in the town you are planning to visit. Travelers are very active bloggers and posters. If they like/dislike something, they are not afraid to voice their opinions.

The advantages of staying in a hostel are:

1) Usually, a cheap place to stay.

2) An opportunity to meet other travelers.

3) Hostels usually have more information about less expensive places to visit in the town they are in.

4) Sometimes the hostels have many conveniences like pools, WIFI, free movies, free coffee and a restaurant on site.

Hostels have evolved into convenient places to stay, with all the amenities that one could ask for, at an inexpensive price.

If a traveler want to see the world on a tight budget, hostels are one of the many places to stay that will not cost a bundle.

Good hub. The four sites you listed to check the quality of hostels and other things will be very useful to me. The only one I knew of was the Lonely Planet.

Hi Realhousewife,

Before you book, I'm going to be writing about staying with local people and expats.

This can be free or very low priced.

I'll try and get that up today or first thing in the morning.

Glad to read that you enjoyed the Hub, an I really appreciate the comment.

Have a great New Year!

Cheers,

John

Great info. We have quite a few hostels around Riga and they're especially great for students and families.

Hi Gypsy,

Thanks for confirming my view that hostels are a great alternative to the luxury hotels.

If you're traveling to see the sites, how much time are you going to spend in a hotel room?

Cheers,

John

Thumbs up on this, John, Thanks for these articles that help us simplify our lives and realize that we can in fact do what we aspire to do. While the accomodations were spartan, I stayed at a youth hostel in London many years ago and was no worse for where in a city where things could become quite expensive.

Hi Crede,

Glad you found the article helpful.

I don't know how many years ago that you stayed in hostels, but some have evolved to being as luxurious as 3 start hotels.

Have a great week!

Cheers,

John

Claptona,

I've learned something new with this. :)

I was never interested in staying at a hostel because I had no desire to be cramped up in a tiny room and having to wait in line to use shared bathroom facilities, lol!

I admit, I'm still exceptionally partial to nice hotel accomodations, however, I found this useful information regardless, especially the description and the links. :)

Thanks much!

Hi Femme,

I'm glad you found the Hub useful.

Traveling has changed quite a bit over the years - hostels have kept up with changing their sites, mostly competing with all the amenities of good styled hotels.

Then their are the "bed and breakfast" types that fill the void of wanting inexpensive rooms.

Quite an array of choices await the traveler that is not boxed in with preconceived ideas.

Thanks much for your comment, it's greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John
